Where to stay in Lisbon:
Every central neighbourhood of Lisbon has a wide range of accomodation options, and you will be grateful to be able to walk home at night without any problems. More expensive hotels can be found around Avenida Liberdade. Baixa neighbourhood is full of places to stay for those on a budget. There are good hostels also in Chiado and Alfama. 20-30 minutes walk from the centre are Bairro Camões and Picoas which are full of small hotels or "residencial"; these are a little more out of the way but much quieter at night for exactly this reason,and a short walk leads straight to Avenida da Liberdade and Praça dos Restauradores. If you choose to stay in Bairro Alto, remember that the fantastic nightlife in Lisboa starts around midnight and the streets will be full, and noisy until the early morning.

Undoubtedly the best way to see Lisbon is on foot. Choose a neighbourhood, and just go for a walk. That said, the city enjoys an excellent modern network of easily accessible (and affordable) public transport including trams, trains, metro and buses. The traditional small tram or "Electrico" has become a symbol of the city. 24 hour travel passes and rechargeable travel cards are available.
Taxi
It's always worth asking the driver for an approximate price before starting the journey. Taxi in Lisbon is fast and very cheap compared to other EU capitals.

Subway
Lisbon's metro serves almost all principal points of the city, including the airport and main train stations. It's worth getting the "Viva Viagem" travelcard; rechargeable and valid on all public transport in the city. Travel time from airport to the city centre (Rossio or Baixo-Chiado station) is 30 minutes. The metro runs until 1am every day.

Train
Lisbon regional trains' most popular destinations for tourists are Cascais (Cais de Sodré station is convenient to centre) and Sintra (Rossio station is convenient to centre). Trains leave every 20 minutes, and both journeys take approx. 40 minutes.

Bus
Aerobus 1 to city centre from airport; €3.50. The bus company is also responsible for the famous Santa Justa Elevator (€5.00 2 trips), and the 3 "tram elevators" at Bica, Lavra and Gloria (€3.60 2 trips). There is a good network of daily bus routes, many of which also run at night.

Train
The trams or "eletricos" have become a symbol of Lisbon. Few lines remain, but those that do are well worth using. The modern version 15E from Praça Figueira passes the trendy Alcântara Docks, and Belem (for the famous bakery, Geronimos Monastery, Monument to the voyages of discovery, and the best views of 25 April suspension bridge). The traditional 28E is the best way to see the old town as it runs all around the narrow lanes of Alfama and Bairro Alto. Most trams run until 1am every day.

Weather in Lisbon:
Lisbon has the warmest winters of any European capital, and the mildest night-time temperatures too. From May to October expect highs in the 30s and lows of 15-16˚C; Transitional months March, April and October range from lows of 11 or 12˚ to highs of 20˚C. During winter months from December to February expect days between 8˚ and 15˚C. The period from June to September is your best bet to avoid rainy days, and of course Lisbon is beside the sea so a breeze is always a possibility. Even in winter the sun can be very strong on a clear day so don't forget those sunglasses.
