Where to stay in Saint Petersburg:
In St. Petersburg you can choose from various accommodation options, since hotels range from grand historic properties to mini-hotels that can offer stylish accommodation, superior service and a truly personalized welcome. If you're coming to St. Petersburg to see the sights, especially if this is your first visit, you'll probably want to stay as close to the city's most popular visitor attractions as possible. St. Petersburg's public transport network is extensive and efficient with one being able to get to a destination without a problem. The metro, which is the deepest in the world, is undoubtedly the best bet for visitors, and covers nearly all of the city, with new stations opening almost every year. Overground transport is bewilderingly varied with a system of buses, trolleybuses, trams, taxis, and marshrutkas (small shuttles). Fares for all kinds of public transport are comparatively low (it costs around $1 or less for any single journey), but if you are staying in the city for longer than a week, it is probably worth investing in a travel card.
Subway
St. Petersburg's metro is perhaps not quite as majestic as Moscow's, but architecturally it's still a cut above nearly any other public transport system in the world and it is also remarkably efficient. It is also the world's deepest subway, as its lanes go below the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg, so be prepared for vertiginous views from the top of the escalator. The first metro line was opened on November 15, 1955. Since then the metro network has grown to five lines with an average of 1.9 km (1.19 miles) between its 62 stations.

Buses, trolleybuses and trams are a very handy way to get around the city and they tend to cover routes that the metro doesn’t, making them essential for certain parts of town. Bus stops are marked by signs with the letter "A", which stands for "avtobus" and trolleybus and tram stops are marked with signs with a blue letter "T". On all of these transport types, you get on and then pay a conductor who will come around the vehicle and sell you tickets, he can usually be recognised by the special uniform.

The best way to get a taxi is to order one through a company as prices will be a lot lower than those charged if you flag a driver down on the street. Most companies will be able to get a car to you anywhere in the center of Saint Petersburg in 15-20 minutes. You will need to give the operator a phone number that you can be contacted on. Operators will usually not speak English, so unless you speak Russian you might want your hotel reception to order a taxi for you.

Marshrutkas (small shuttle or fixed-route minibus) are fast and you can get on and off anywhere along their routes. They are often the best means of getting to St. Petersburg's suburban attractions, and are the cheapest way to get to/from the city's airport. Route numbers, usually prefixed with the letter 'K', are prominently displayed on the front and side of the minibus (sometimes in English for popular tourist areas).

St. Petersburg’s weather is most known for its changeability and its high level of cloud cover. The city has a humid continental climate which is heavily influenced by the Baltic Sea. Summer, from June till August, is warm and quite wet. The average high temperature rises to 19°C (66,2°F) in June, peaks at 23°C (73,4°F) in July then drops to 21°C (69,8°F) in August. Autumn, from September to October, cools down quickly and is often very drizzly. The average high temperature drops to 14°C (57,2°F) in September then 7°C (44,6°F) in October. Winter, from November till March, is what St Petersburg is all about. If you’re looking for snow and ice, St. Petersburg is where it’s at. The average high drops below freezing for most of the season: 1°C (33,8°F) in November, -3°C (26,6°F) in December, -4°C (24,8°F) in January, -5°C (23°F) in February and 0°C (32°F) in March.
